What are you talking to HIM for....?!

Patrick Wintour in today's Guardian:
"Before meeting Brown, Obama will meet Blair, probably at his hotel for breakfast, to discuss climate change and the Middle East, two issues on which Blair remains politically active. Some Blairites are claiming that Obama regards the photo-opportunity with the former prime minister as more important to his presidential campaign prospects in the US than a long conversation with Gordon Brown"

This is the sort of snippet that gets bloggers and lazy journalists in an unnecessary tizz - room for lots of speculation about hidden agendas, bruised egos and the like (see James Forsyth over at Coffee House).

Of course a photograph with Blair is more useful to Obama than one with Brown - a photograph with Brown is more useful than one with Cameron and a photograph alone outside No.10 is more useful than any of them. Blair was PM for 10 years, stood by George W Bush's side in congress within a week of September 11 and has a higher profile in the US than any PM since Thatcher. Why is this revelation worthy of any attention?
