On the wind down now to Christmas so posting will be light at best but a couple of things I want to add my tuppence worth to this afternoon.
Since I'm always quick to take issue with Polly Toynbee when I think she's wrong it's only fair I point out when she's more or less on the button. I haven't actually seen as many 'PC gone mad' stories as in previous years but Polly's experience shows how keen the media are to try and concoct them anyway:
Since I'm always quick to take issue with Polly Toynbee when I think she's wrong it's only fair I point out when she's more or less on the button. I haven't actually seen as many 'PC gone mad' stories as in previous years but Polly's experience shows how keen the media are to try and concoct them anyway:
"I had at least five calls from broadcasters this year inviting me to say it would be a jolly good thing if Christmas were rebranded Winterval"She cites a study by Theos bemoaning the lack of biblical knowledge in the UK but rightly defends secularists against the charge that they're somehow on a crusade to banish Christ from Christmas - if knowledge isn't what it was and religious Christmas cards and nativity plays are becoming less common then market forces have a greater part to play than Dawkins, Toynbee et al. She rightly points out that you can be an aetheist and still appreciate and value the Christian narrative:
"The loss of classical mythology has made much poetry, art and literature incomprehensible to most people. The loss of Christian mythology would make most European history and painting impenetrable. Secularists do not welcome ignorance as a substitute for declining faith."On a related note there's a discussion over at Paul Linford's blog on whether or not being a 'person of faith' makes someone a better MP. I won't rehash the discussion / comments and they're well worth a read but with all due respect to Paul I have to side with those who suggest it simply shouldn't be a factor and should remain an intensley private matter. More later perhaps...

Cas even in my non position as Vice Chair of Islington North Cons I had the local Papers calling every time they wanted an “Outraged “opinion. On one occasion a journalist tried for about ten minutes to obtain a criticism of the NHS over some paltry inefficiency when I wanted to make another point and told then I wasn’t joining in with the “Story”. Polly Toynbee is pretending there is a particular conspiracy whereas this is just what journalists do all the time. This is how anyone should read any News . Polly Toynbee is always using this trick of a false context with statistics , and “facts “ that she treats much a s a card cheat treats aces. There is , no doubt , a place for a hard left zealot propagandist but the fact she was Editor of Social Affairs at the BBC (88-97) always staggers me
She is also disingenuous about the attack on the traditions of this country by the detested imposition of multiculturalism . Nativity Plays , for example , are dying out in London because it hardly makes sense when many Boroughs have well over 60% of their children born to foreign mothers and speaking English , if at all as a second language.( I posted the figures recently ) Outside the immigrations clusters , the Liberal upper middleclass who habitually remove their own children from these wastelands enforce their self congratulatory creed by supporting morbid sensitivity to everyone else’s culture except the English .Who would have dreamt that they would destroy the ancient tradition of the Pub which this arrogant Government have …and working men’s clubs even faster. After that why not “cancel Christmas”…Bonfire night has gone .
It sometimes seems to me that these modern Puritans just hate people smiling , and while I admit that is a little sweeping , wouldn’t you say that Conservatives are , in general , much more fun. There is a something about the gaudy swollen cheeked excess of Christmas that these grey drippy nosed sour lipped emotional eunuchs instinctively fear
"While pretending to attack us, covertly these Christians stir resentment against immigrants."
Suppose she made a similarly sweeping and incorrect remark about blacks , gays or any of the current selection of nominated victims ?Bearing mind the control her Paper has had over the BBC, especially in the 90s I find the Toynbee theme of a “Biased” media close to an outright lie .Lets be honest whenever anyone makes the Press an their bias a main strut of an argument it’s a weak one and I know Conservatives do it as well.
Facts
There are loony left Coucils
They do impose absurd PC regulations
They do wish to destroy the countries heritage
She seems to think that being ethnically part of a Christian country ,is contrary , when you are not ‘Born again’ , but again this is a problem she only has with our culture not with all her pet exotics .
This made me laugh
‘If the royal family can trill, with solemn faces and gladsome minds, "What can I give him, poor as I am?" then anyone can.’
Ha ha Poll lets have a good old laugh at posh people shall we .Polly Toynbee is a direct descendant of George Howard, 9th Earl of Carlisle. But blithers on from Italy about how we should go to work in order that others , like her , can be philanthropic with our money. She appears to find this less amusing. I agree
Happy Xmas C...( I think I may safely assume I will not be getting a present from Bob Piper ...:))
Never realised Newmania went on so until I encountered him on your blog Cassie. Also well done for attracting the inscrutable comment above...
I'm almost wholly agnostic about Christmas and am always relieved when 2nd January comes around. But if we are to celebrate it, then let it be the thing we have traditionally celebrated as a nation. 'Winterval' is the most absurd PC idea I've heard for some time.
