For some reason nobody else seems to have picked up on this and it's from a fairly reputable source, the International Herald Tribune no less. Brown and Sarkozy throwing their weight behind Blair for the newly created EU presidency role. Brown says
"Tony Blair would be a great candidate for any significant international job"Little more to add myself and obviously not at all likely but I can think of some prominent bloggers who may just physically explode at even the merest suggestion of this....

I'm no expert on Milton NM but I suspect this verse is about self-inflicted misery and how our torments are often of our own making. Perhaps there's a lesson there for the more extreme Europhobes among us...
